The Spanish Fort Fire Department unveiled its latest fire truck this morning during a ceremony at its main fire house on Highway 31.

The new 2021 Sunbelt pumper goes into service today. The new pumper holds 850 gallons of water and has 1250 feet of hose. This new model was paid for with city funds and also through the fire department fundraisers.

The new pumper truck will be replacing a 1999 model. Firefighters had a "water down" session where water from the truck being retired is used to wash the new one.

Spanish Fort Fire Chief Roger Few says overtime, because of the new truck, the department will save money when it comes to maintenance.

"The big advantage is maintenance cost. Overtime the vehicle is going to require more and more maintenance, with the new apparatus there's less maintenance. The truck is a safe truck", says Few.

Few also spoke to the significance of receiving the truck on the anniversary of 9/11.

"It's a somber day for the fire service. We certainly want to remember all the lives lost on that tragic day. We picked this day to do the dedication because it is engrained in the fire service", said Few.
