The UTV 44 Game of the Week headed to Lipscomb Stadium for the 7A Region 1 matchup between the Theodore Bobcats and the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets. Theodore needing a win to help improve their playoff chances while McGill looks to remain undefeated and on top on Region 1.

McGill would get the ball first to start the game, and they were able to take the opening drive and get into Bobcat territory. Facing a 3rd down with 20 yards to go, junior quarterback Sheldon Layman found junior tight end Bo Hightower for a 25-yard grab to get down to the Theodore 21-yard line. A few plays later Layman would get the Yellow Jackets on the board first when he took off and found the end zone from 21 yards out. The PAT was good and McGill took the early 7-0 lead with just over nine minutes left in the 1st quarter.

Theodore’s first possession would not be as successful. Starting on their own 20-yard line they would only gain 7 yards on the drive and where forced to punt. On the punt, there was a bad snap and the Bobcats recovered the ball but was unable to punt the ball and would just turn the ball over on downs and McGill would get the ball starting on the Bobcats 10-yard line.

The Yellow Jackets could not convert the great starting field position into any points as penalties against McGill forced them to lose yards rather than gain them. Facing a 4th down of their own, Head Coach Earnest Hill opted to go for the 1st down instead of attempting a field goal as the weather conditions had deuterated with the wind and the rain. They could not pick up the first down and turned the ball over on downs.

At the end of the 1st quarter, Theodore was facing another 4th down situation and elected to punt the ball. This time McGill was able to get to the punter and senior running back Khalil Nettles blocked the punt and the Yellow Jackets would get the ball in Bobcats territory.

The Yellow Jackets would drive down to inside the 20-yard line but Theodore’s defense would put a stop to the drive and force McGill into a 4th down situation. This time Head Coach Earnest Hill would send in the kicking team and attempt the 30-yard field goal. Again weather was a factor all night and the field goal was no good and the score was still 7-0 with over seven minutes left in the 1st half.

Following the missed field goal, Theodore would take over the possession of the ball, but as all the previous drives senior quarterback Trevor Andrews could not get the ball moving on the McGill defense and were eventually forced to punt the ball away.

Still having the favor in field position, McGill would again start a drive already in Bobcat territory. And as in their previous possession, the Yellow Jackets could not get the ball in end zone on the Theodore defense. Kicker Chase Mahler would come in this time and make the 35-yard field goal to extend McGill’s lead 10-0 with just under 4 minutes left in the 1st half.

Theodore would get the ball to start the second half, but would again punt the ball away and not put any points on the board. But their defense was keeping them in the game as another possession by McGill would stall and would settle for a field goal. The only problem for Theodore was that McGill was holding the ball and taking valuable time off the clock for the Bobcats. Mahler’s 28-yard field goal again extended the Yellow Jacket’s lead 13-0 with about four minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

Late in the 3rd quarter, the Yellow Jackets offense would finally break the Bobcats defense. Junior receiver Jennings Clayton would haul in a 23-yard reception to help the McGill drive. Then senior running back Bryan Hill would help the cause with his own 22 yard run. Hill would then cap the 5 play, 52-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. The PAT was good and now McGill lead 20-0 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Early in the 4th quarter, the Bobcats offense had was moving the ball down field on the McGill defense. Looking to get some points on the board, Andrews was attempting a pass down field only to have senior defensive back Jakorian Bennet pick the ball off at the McGill 10-yard line and return it 35 yards to the 45-yard line.

The rest of the quarter the two offense traded turnovers, first Theodore’s senior running back Roy Tookes fumbled the ball and senior defensive back Bryceson Massey recovered the fumble. Then Theodore’s junior defensive back Kameron Brown stepped in front of backup quarterback Sam Satterwhite’s pass to pick it off. McGill would take the 20-0 win to remain undefeated on the season.

The Bobcats fall to 5-4 on the year and 3-4 in the region. Theodore will prepare to face Foley this week, the Bobcats will need a win in order to continue their season into the playoffs.

McGill wins their 24th straight region game and their 25th straight regular season game. They remain undefeated and will look to stay that way as they prepare to play for the region championship as they will have to travel to take on the Fairhope Pirates.
