Blount Leopards (4-2; 3-1) vs. #5 Spanish Fort Toros (4-1; 4-0)
It’s back to region play following bye weeks and non-region play. Teams are preparing for the final stretch of the season and none of them are bigger than the 6A Region 1 matchup between the Blount Leopards and the Spanish Fort Toros. The UTV44 Game of the Week heads to The Hill to showcase this matchup.
For the Blount Leopards, head coach Lev Holly and his Leopards have lost two of their last three, and only scored 21 total points in the two losses to Saraland and McGill-Toolen. Senior quarterback Jacoby Davis and his offense have also had five turnovers in those two losses. Senior running back Trajan Pugh has helped carry the load of the offense that is averaging 25.8 points per game. The defense has struggled in those two losses as well. They gave up the most points (42) all season in the loss to Saraland. They will have another tough task with the Toros. Junior defensive lineman Cortlin Martin and senior linebacker Kyle Cass are still leading this defense that is still only giving up 16.2 points on the season.
Third year head coach Ben Blackmon and his Toros are coming off their bye week, having last played in week 5 in a 51-28 win at Baldwin County. Starting quarterback Jack Samsel, running back Connor Hegan, and receiver Kris Abrams-Drain have led the way this season having scored 40 plus points in the last three games. The offense is averaging 34 points this season. The 2017 Spanish Fort defense has not let down and has lived up to the history of being a stingy defense as they are only giving up 14.4 points per game.
These two teams have only met three times on the field with Spanish Fort holding the series record of 2-1, Blount’s only win against the Toros came last with 25-0 win at home. Tune in as kickoff is set for Friday at 7pm on UTV44.
