Preview of Week 3: Murphy Panthers vs. #5 McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets

Murphy Panthers (1-1; 1-0) vs. #5 McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets (2-0; 1-0)

It’s week #3 in the season and its time for one of the oldest rivalries in the state of Alabama, it’s the Battle of the Cannon between the Murphy Panthers and the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets. The rivalry dates back to 1935 when Murphy won the first ever meeting between the two teams.

For the Murphy Panthers, 1st year head coach Muskingum Barnes will look to his senior quarterback Maurice Robinson to lead the offense. Murphy heads into this week at .500 after a week one loss to Baker and then last week’s win over Alma Bryant. Robinson will look to junior running back Anthony Miller who had a rushing touchdown against the Hurricanes. Murphy’s offense gained over 350 offensive yards last week and will need to do the same this week. The Panther’s defense will also need to set the tone early in this game as they have given up 44 points over the last two games.

McGill-Toolen’s 1st year head coach, Earnest Hill will look to keep the Yellow Jackets regular season winning streak in tack. McGill-Toolen has won 17 regular season games in a row following last week’s 15-6 win over Davidson which also is 19 region wins in a row. Their last region lost was to Murphy in 2014. The Yellow Jacket offense is led by junior quarterback Sheldon Layman. Layman already has multiple offers going into this season and will look to senior running back Bryan Hill to help carry the load for the offense. The 2016 receiving corp. has graduated and Layman will count on senior receivers Turner McLaughlin and Oakley Coleman to pick up where they left off last season. One of the lone returning starters was senior Eric Garror in the defensive backfield. The stingy McGill defense from last year which only gave up 12.6 points per game will have big shoes to fill, but think they can with the likes of senior lineman LeDarrius Cox and junior linebacker Nick Ruggs.

Murphy holds the advantage in the series, 48-36-1. Tune in to see who will be painting the cannon, kickoff is set for Friday at 7pm on UTV44.
