#4 Vigor Wolves (0-0; 0-0) vs. #3 Blount Leopards (0-0; 0-0)
High school football is back for the 2017 season, and what better way to kick the season off than with the Battle of Prichard with the Vigor Wolves taking on the Blount Leopards.
Head coach Deric Scott is starting his third season at Vigor, he has an overall record of 17-10 with playoff appearances in his first two seasons. The Wolves start the season ranked #4 in pre-season polls but will have to find answers after losing the all-around talent of Charles Crawford who is now at Jacksonville State. The Wolves finished 2016 with an 8-4 record and 6-0 in 5A Region 1 play. Scott lead his Wolves to the 2nd round of the state playoff which they lost to Beauregard 48-20. In order to contend for the Region 1 title Scott will be looking for his offense to produce as it did in 2016 when they averaged 30 points per game and with a defense that only gave up an average of 18.3 points per game.
For the Blount Leopards, head coach Lev Holly is also starting his third season at Blount. Holly has an overall record of 23-7 with two playoff appearances with the Leopards. Blount starts their season off ranked #3 in the pre-season polls after finishing the 2016 season with a 10-3 record and a quarter final round loss to Park Crossing 54-51. Holly will be looking to reload his offense that averaged 34.6 points per game behind star quarterback Kadarius Toney. The new QB will have experience on the outside with receivers Lebarron Jones and Collins Wood returning. The defense will have to fill holes with the losses of linebackers Josh Brown, Keelan Keenedy, and defensive back Marcus Wiggins. The defense will look to continue its stingy ways as they only gave up 17.8 points for the 2017 season.
For these two teams it’s the biggest game of the year. Bragging rights are on the line for the City of Prichard. Vigor holds the edge in the series with a 33-12 record, but Blount won the 2016 matchup 29-20. Tune in as kickoff is set for Friday at 7pm on UTV44.
