Week six means it’s the halfway point of the 2018 season and most teams are playing non-regions games. This week Friday Night Rivals heads across the bay for the Battle of the Eastern Shore between the Daphne Trojans and the Fairhope Pirates

For the Daphne Trojans, they are coming off a 40-6 victory over B.C. Rain and then their bye week. The victory over the Red Raiders was Daphne’s first region win of the season after losing two in a row to Spanish Fort and Saraland. Kenny King is in his 3rd season with the Trojans and looking for his third straight trip to the playoffs. Sophomore Trent Battle is still leading the offense in place of the injured senior Gage Bonner. With senior running back Jay Pogue in the backfield they lead a struggling offense that is averaging 22 points per game. Before the 40-point explosion against B.C. Rain, the Trojan offense only scored 48 points in three games. The defense is led by Alabama commit, Senior Christian Williams who continues to shine both in the defensive backfield and on special teams. This year’s defense is giving up 16.5 points through three games.

Fourth year head coach Tim Carter is looking to take his Pirates to the playoffs for the 2nd consecutive year. The offense is led by senior quarterback Devin Mitchell, who is a three-year starter at quarterback, and along with returning starter senior running back Michael Colclasure. This offense is averaging 31.2 points per game and have scored 35+ points in three of their five games. Mitchell did only play in the first half of last week’s 45-17 victory over Davidson, he was pulled late in the first half after suffering an apparent pulled hamstring injury. Back up sophomore quarterback Riley Leonard played the rest of the game. This year’s Fairhope defense is giving up 19 points a game. Last week against Davidson they gave up 304 total yards to the Warriors but 261 of those were rushing yards.

Daphne holds the overall advantage over Fairhope with a 23-6 record, but the Pirates have won three of the last four meetings including last year’s 20-17 win at Daphne. Another year of bragging rights are on the line as it’s the Battle of the Eastern Shore this Friday night kickoff is set for Friday at 7pm on UTV44.
