Fairhope Pirates (1-2) vs. #7 Theodore Bobcats (3-0)
It’s week four and region play is in full swing for the 2019 season. Friday Night Rivals heads south down to Theodore for the 7A Region 1 matchup between the Fairhope Pirates and the #7 ranked Theodore Bobcats.
Head coach Tim Carter is in his fifth season at Fairhope. The Pirates are coming off a tough region home loss to the Murphy Panthers. The Pirates offense is led by junior quarterback Riley Leonard, who took over the starting job during the 2018 season. His offensive weapons include junior running back Cyline Koen and junior receiver Dre Matthews. So far, this season that offense is scoring 21.7 points per game which they are most likely going to need more in order take down the Bobcats. The defense will look to improve after giving up 20 unanswered points to the Panthers in that 26-24 loss. The Fairhope defense is giving up 61 points per game and that includes a shutout against Mary G. Montgomery two weeks ago.
Eric Collier and his Theodore Bobcats are the defending 7A Region 1 champions. Collier is in his 7th year as head coach and is hoping to repeat as region champs. They are undefeated through two region games so far, taking down Baker and Foley. His offense is led by senior quarterback Gavin Moore. His offensive weapons include sophomore running back Kierstan Rogers and junior running back Jameel Richardson. They have scored 8 of the 13 touchdowns the offense has put on the board. Over all the offense is averaging 33.7 points per game. The defense has been the staple of the Bobcats and they are led by senior linebacker and Alabama commit Demouy Kennedy and senior linebacker Michael Tims. Tims lead the way last week in shutting out Foley and the defense as a whole is only giving up 13 points per game.
Fairhope leads the overall series between the two with an 11-7 record, but Theodore has won three of the last five meetings including the 17-10 win at Fairhope last season. These two region foes are set to battle this Friday night kickoff is set for Friday at 7pm on UTV44.
