Preview of Week 3: Baldwin County Tigers vs. St. Paul’s Saints

Baldwin County Tigers (1-1) vs. St. Paul’s Saints (1-1)

It’s week three and things are already heating up in 6A Region 1 and UTV44 Friday Night Rivals heads to Springhill for the region showdown between the Baldwin County Tigers and the St. Paul’s Saints. Both teams are coming off victories from week #2, Baldwin County got a big region win over Gulf Shores and St. Paul’s an overtime win over Park Crossing.

Head coach Nathan McDaniel is in his sixth season at Baldwin County where the Tigers are still looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2003. They went 6-4 in 2018 and once again just missed out on a playoff spot. The Tigers are coming off their first region win of the year with a 63-13 victory over Gulf Shores. This year’s offense is led by sophomore quarterback A.J. Mix, along with senior running back James Stanley. Mix threw for over 200 yards and had three total touchdowns while Stanley rushed for over 100 yards and had a touchdown himself. On the defensive side of the ball, their strength will be on the defensive line with seniors Albany Casey and Jeremy Moore, Albany is out the first part of the season with a knee injury but hoping to be back soon. Others stepping up are senior linebacker Jeffery Johnson who had 10 tackles last week against Gulf Shores.

Steve Mask and his Saints are also coming off their first win of the season with a thrilling overtime 27-26 overtime victory against Park Crossing. Mask who is also in his sixth season at St. Paul’s will look to get the offense going this week. The Saints offense has struggle through the first two games only scoring 18.5 points a game. The offense will have key weapons returning for this year, J Greene is returning as starting quarterback for his senior year, along with running back Jordan Ingram. One of the main strengths of the team year in and year out, continues to be the defense which was only giving up 14.9 points a game. Senior linebacker and Iowa commit Reggie, and Auburn commit Daniel Allen-Foster lead a defense that will be looking to get back to their stingy ways.

These two teams met for the first-time last season with St. Paul’s earning the 17-7 victory in wet conditions. These two region foes are set to battle this Friday night kickoff is set for Friday at 7pm on UTV44.
