Spanish Fort Toros (0-1) vs. Daphne Trojans (0-1)
It’s week two and UTV44 Friday Night Rivals stays on the Eastern Shore for the 6a Region 1 showdown between the Spanish Fort Toros and the Daphne Trojans. Both teams are coming off losses in week on both to 7A schools, and neither team wants to start the season off with two losses.
Ben Blackmon is in his Toros will look to rebound from a devastating 37-7 loss to the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets. The Toros gave up two quick touchdowns and were never able to recover. The offense led by senior quarterback Jackson Burkhalter and Ole Miss commit Kris Abrams-Drain, who had the Toros only score, could only gain just over 250 total yards. The biggest blow was the pick six Burkhalter gave up in the 2nd quarter. The defense will be looking to get better as well, not only did they give up 30 points last week but they gave up over 300 total yards on offense as well. South Alabama commit Carlos Johnson and the rest of the defensive squad will have their hands full with quarterback Trent Battle.
Head coach Kenny King is entering his 4th year at Daphne and after a 5-6 season for 2018 he is looking to build off last season and get Daphne back into being a title contender. Leading his offense is junior quarterback Trent Battle. Last week in the 35-21 loss at Theodore, Battle had a part in all three touchdowns as he threw for one and ran for two. The defense which has been key for Daphne since King became head coach will have to rebound after giving up over 400 yards to Theodore. They are led by returning players like defensive lineman Jon Davis and linebacker Hamilton Baker.
Spanish Fort holds the overall record at 6-1, Daphne’s lone win came in 2014. These two neighboring teams are set to battle this Friday night kickoff is set for Friday at 7pm on UTV44.
