Week two starts region play for most teams this week. UTV44’s Friday Night Rivals will be showcasing two schools that are just down the road from each other with the Daphne Trojans taking on the Spanish Fort Toros.

For the Daphne Trojans, they are coming off a 16-13 victory over Theodore where senior kicker Diego Guajardo kicked three field goals to help seal the victory. Kenny King is starting his 3rd season with the Trojans and looking for his third straight trip to the playoffs. This year his offense will be led by Zack Golson who was at McGill-Toolen before coming to Daphne. The offense will also see other new faces on offense as well after losing starting quarterback Chance Newman to graduation and running back Mike Franklin transferred out of Daphne. This year’s offense will look to improve as it only averaged 21.7 points per game. Senior Gage Bonner looked to be the starter but Sophomore Trent Battle took over after Booner was injured. The defense is led by Alabama commit, Senior Christian Williams who had a blocked PAT against Theodore. The 2017 Trojan defense was one of the best in the state only giving up 10.8 points per game. Against Theodore last week, the defense gave up 219 total yards to the Bobcats.

Ben Blackmon and the Toros are looking to regroup after losing 48-13 at McGill-Toolen last week. Turnovers plagued Spanish Fort giving three away and all three were converted into points. Junior quarterback Jackson Burhalter will look to improve as he was a part of two of the turnovers, one a fumble and the other was an interception. He did score two touchdowns, one on the ground and the other a pass to junior receiver Kris Abrams-Draine. The defense will also have to improve as the have now given up 117 points in their last two games. Big plays hurt the defense against McGill, two of the three touchdown passes thrown were for 62 and 51 yards. Two of the four rushing touchdowns were for 86 and 46 yards. Overall the defense gave up 484 total yards to the Yellow Jackets. This defense a year ago was only giving up 21.3 points a game.

Spanish Fort has won the last two meetings which includes last year’s 8-7 win at Daphne. The Toros have won 5 of the six meetings against Daphne. Another year of bragging rights are on the line as they neighboring teams are set to battle this Friday night kickoff is set for Friday at 7pm on UTV44.
