Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson has out-fundraised his opponent former Mayor Sam Jones. As Local 15's Andrea Ramey reports, Stimpson has raised almost $1 million dollars in the last two years.
Stimpson's campaign released its first TV ad today. A review of campaign finance reports shows he has the money to buy the air time, raising $242,393 in June alone.
"We feel great. And representing the citizens of Mobile is the greatest honor I've ever had in my life," said Stimpson.
Stimpson has received tremendous support from the business community with multiple car dealerships or their managers writing checks for $5,000 and $10,000. Baseball star Jake Peavy, who opened a recording studio in downtown Mobile tied with Beard Equipment Company as the largest contributors at $15,000.
"I think the Peavy Foundation and the Peavy organization, they're very interested in what's going on in the city. They've made an investment in the city, and they see the things we're doing will help the business enterprise," said Stimpson.
While he's received the backing of many businesses, Stimpsons' campaign says 1,260 individuals and 127 businesses have contributed and that nearly 60% of donations are $250 or less.
Fundraising for his opponent Sam Jones is a much different story. The former mayor only starting fundraising last month and raised $7,250.
"I think anybody jumping in this late in the campaign, especially running against an incumbent. There haven't been any real big scandals. Things seem to be running well in the city," said USA Political Science Professor Dr. Sam Fisher.
Fisher says it will come down to voter turnout but given how fundraising has gone, it's a good indication of what the outcome will be.
"If you get a big disparity between the candidates, it suggests it's not much of a race," said Fisher.
We reached out to Jones and his campaign manager asking for an interview but did not receive a call back. Two other candidates who have qualified to run for mayor have not reported raising any funds.
