A Winter Storm Warning, Winter Weather Advisory and Freeze Warning are in effect for parts of the viewing area.
The main snow zone ended up right where we expected it to be: Well north and west of Mobile. Clarke, Washington, Choctaw Counties in Alabama (in the NBC 15 viewing area) getting several inches of accumulation.
That meant a cold rain Friday in the Mobile area and northwest Florida with steady temperatures in the mid-to-upper 30s. The rain will mix with snow this evening (mainly along and north of I-10) and possibly change over to ALL snow before coming to an end late tonight. Any accumulation will be minimal, if any at all, and will mostly be on trees and grassy areas.
As skies clear-out by early Saturday morning, temperatures will tumble into the upper 20s. That is where the freeze warning comes into play, as much of our area has yet to see a widespread freeze. Expect another round of freezing temperatures Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Most roads may not have a chance to dry before temperatures fall below freezing, so patchy ice and dangerous black ice (because you can't see it) is possible by first thing Saturday morning. Please travel with care. With the freeze in the forecast remember to protect your pipes, plants, and pets before you head to bed because it will be too late if you wait until tomorrow morning.
Sunny skies all weekend long will "warm" us into the upper 40s and low 50s, but that’s still 10 to 15 degrees below normal for early to mid-December. Dry times continue through the end of next week.
