High risk rip current signs flash on Dauphin Island Thursday afternoon as wind gusts and choppy waves pick up across the barrier island .
Mayor Jeff Collier says new warning signage is one of the ways the town is trying to inform visitors and islanders about dangerous conditions with Tropical Storm Barry moving closer to the Gulf Coast.
Collier says this is peak tourist season with families staying in rentals during summer vacation. The town is working with vacation rental agencies to provide visitors with information about storm preparation and safety.
Employees with Dauphin Island have been warned they may need to work unusual shifts based on Barry’s impact. Collier says they’ve stocked up on fuel and supplies to respond to what may come this way.
