The Mobile Civic Center is no stranger to the COVID-19 pandemic. Just last year it was a spot were COVID-19 testing was administered. Now it could be the place many people receive their first dose of vaccines.
Mayor Sandy Stimpson is working with USA Health to turn the parking lot into a public drive-thru vaccination site. Freezers needed for the vaccines are set up on site. The city of Mobile and USA Health are actively meeting to iron out the details.
Sources tell NBC 15 News that USA is waiting for the vaccine from the Alabama Department of Public Health and working on staffing for this drive-thru site. Both the mayor's office and USA Health are keeping a tight lid on details about this setup.
Mayor Stimpson could hold a news conference as early as tomorrow or Friday to release more information on when and who can come to the Civic Center for vaccinations.
