MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) - A Lieutenant with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office has been arrested and charged with rape, sodomy, and sex abuse of two minors.
Mobile Co. Sheriff Lt. Paul Bailey's bond was preset at $127,000 and he was able to bond out of jail in less than two hours.
The District Attorney's Office has released the following statement:
Lt. Paul Stephan Bailey with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office was indicted by a Mobile County Grand Jury for the Offense of Rape 1st, Rape 2 of a minor over the age of 12, Sodomy 2nd of a minor over the age of 12, and Sex Abuse 2nd degree two counts of a minor over the age of 12.
These indictments were the result of a complaint received by the Mobile County District Attorneys Office who requested that the State Bureau of Investigation conduct a thorough investigation of these allegations.
Rape 1st is a Class A felony with a punishment range of 10-99 years or life. Bond was set by the Mobile County Grand Jury at $75,000.
Rape 2nd is a class B felony with a punishment range of 2-20 years. Bond was set by the Mobile County Grand Jury at $25,000.
Sodomy 2nd degree is a class B felony with a punishment range of 2-20 years. Bond was set by the Mobile County Grand Jury at $25,000.
Sex Abuse 2nd degree is a Class A misdemeanor with a punishment of up to 1 year in metro jail. Bond in each of these was set at $1000 cash only.
If the defendant makes bond the Mobile County Grand Jury imposed a condition of his bonds to be that he be placed on electronic monitoring and have no contact with the two victims.
These cases will proceed to Circuit Court for a jury trial. Any review of bonds will be handled by a Mobile County Circuit Court Judge.
The Mobile County Sheriff's Office also released a statement about Lt. Paul Bailey:
Today, May 15, 2018, LT. PAUL BAILEY, was arrested and charged with Rape 1st, Rape 2nd, Sodomy 2nd and 2 counts of Sexual Abuse. District Attorney Ashley Rich contacted Sheriff Cochran and made him aware of the information brought to her office about Lt. Bailey. The DA turned information over to the Alabama State Bureau of Investigations. SBI presented to a Grand Jury and Lt. Bailey has been charged and booked into Metro Jail. “We are continuing to work with SBI on this investigation and will begin our disciplinary procedures immediately," said Sheriff Sam Cochran.
Lt. Paul Bailey has been with Mobile County Sheriff’s Office since 2002. He was promoted to the rank of Lt. In 2017.
