UPDATE 7/15/2019: ALEA identified the suspect who died as 24-year-old Billy Gene Wycoff of Mobile. They released this statement:
On Thursday, July 11, 2019, Agents with the ALEA State Bureau of Investigation responded to a vehicle pursuit. The pursuit came to an end on the Causeway, just East of Exit 30, within Baldwin County. The suspect driver exited his vehicle and ran into a marsh area north of the Causeway. Prior to locating the subject, a gunshot was heard. ALEA Troopers, Deputies and other Officers from surrounding local agencies responded to the scene, to assist in locating the subject. The subject was found just inside the marsh area, with a single gunshot wound to the head. The subject has been identified as Billy Gene Wycoff, 24, of Mobile. The investigation is ongoing, and findings will be turned over to the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office. A late night police chase in Mobile ended with shots being fired and a suspect dead.
State troopers tell us shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday night a chase was sparked in west Mobile as officers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation.
The suspect then made his way down I-10 exiting at the causeway.
The man swiped another car during the chase, causing minor damage.
That's when Alabama State Troopers say the male suspect got out of his car, fired on Troopers, and wandered into the thicket.
Alabama State Troopers tell us that's when they heard what they believe were gunshots.
Troopers quickly found the man dead in the water of the thicket.
The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the cause of death.
