A packed house awaited the mayor and council members of Bayou La Batre as they prepared to discuss radical rezoning of the coastal town.

Residents demanded an apology for Mayor Terry Downey calling his city a mudhole, many even wearing shirts showing pride in the mud they say is in their blood.

The mayor and staff promised to go back to the drawing board on rezoning that could cut into citizen residential property but the people of the Bayou showed no confidence. One man called for Downey to step down and was met with loud cheers.

Another woman said her property was her own and the city couldn’t tell her what to do with it.
