The Alabama House of Representatives voted on a gas tax increase on Friday afternoon.
The vote was approved on 83-20 after debating for five hours. The bill will now move to the Alabama Senate.
The bill will increase to 10-cent-a-gallon to help fund road and bridge construction.
There will be a three year time frame in which the increase will phased in.
The proposal will also target electric and hybrid vehicles, placing an annual fee on them.
