After weeks of discussion and a tight deadline looming Mobile city leaders passed the 2018 fiscal year budget.
"Now we have a budget, we have something to work with and we'll make it work," Mayor Sandy Stimpson said.
City council members initially decided to delay the vote for two weeks and miss the October 1st deadline.
However, after a special called meeting Friday, they came to an agreement that includes raises and a bonus for some employees.
Councilman Levon Manzie added a $400 bonus for city employees who make less than $45,000 a year and councilman John Williams added a bonus for retirees.
• To authorize a lump sum salary supplement to be paid to eligible employees.
• To provide a lump sum pension supplement to retirees and beneficiaries participating in the RSA Retirement Plan.
• To authorize a lump sum pension supplement to retirees and beneficiaries participating in the Police and Firefighters' Pension Plan.
• To authorize longevity pay for eligible full-time uniform Firefighters and ALS Fire medics.
The money will come from the Economic Development Incentives fund. Mayor Stimpson says pulling that money shouldn't hurt the city.
"If there's an incentive we need to entice someone to come here, we'll get back with the city council and say this is what we have to do," Stimpson said.
The council also introduced a longevity pay raise for firefighters. Every five years firefighters will get a 2.5 percent raise up to 20 years or 10 percent.
"It's a great win for us today," Mobile Firefighters Association President Matt Waltman said.
Firefighters say the raise will help across the board. "This is one of the greatest points as far as recruitment goes for future employees as well as long tenure employees," Waltman said.
The budget will go into effect October 1, 2018.
City council will vote on the longevity pay raise proposal October 24th.
