Mobile inmate accused of shooting officer in 2016 found dead in apparent suicide

The Mobile man accused of shooting an undercover police officer was rushed to the hospital early Friday morning.

According to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, Ryan Burkhardt was taken to the hospital after he was found hanging in his cell at Mobile Metro Jail. Authorities are investigating it as an apparent suicide.

In April 2016, he led police on high speed chase in Grand Bay, opened fire, and wounded an officer. He was heavily armed at the time when police returned fire.

Authorities have said he is linked to a domestic extremist group and explosives found at a Semmes store.

Burkhardt is expected to be sentenced at the end of this month and could serve up to 35 years in prison.
